 As a result of a tragic accident on Golden Peak, Ashley Stamp, a 13 year old ski racer visiting from Steamboat Springs, passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2004. Ashley was a member of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and had recently represented her family, club and nation at the International Children's Competitions in Whistler. Her father said that her dream was to be as great as Picabo Street. At the body shop in which he works, he'd painted Ashley's helmet to look just like the one that Picabo wore.
Many knew Ashley personally; and from her friends, her coaches, her parents and grand-parents we learned so much about what a wonderful and special person she was. Full of life, a friend to all she met, passionate about skiing and filled with dreams. Ashley represented all that is great about our youth, our sport and the pursuit of excellence. We will all miss her more than words can say.
When asked what we could do to help him and his family, Aaron Stamp said: "Go, take care of your kids from Vail.... tell them to go fast and follow their dreams. It's what Ashley would have wanted."
We are all reminded how fragile our existence in this world is. How important it is to hold our loved ones closely and to celebrate each new day. Let us all honor Ashley's memory by living our lives to the fullest dreaming of greatness and helping others do the same.
Ashley's bib number on Sunday was #84. From this day forward, no one will race with that number in a ski race hosted in Vail by Ski & Snowboard Club Vail. A blank space will appear next to that number and a pause will occur in the race allowing us to remember Ashley.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Stamp family, The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and all who've been so deeply affected by her loss.
