History
1962
- Ski Club Vail is formed so that Vail can host USSA and FIS sanctioned races.
- Bob Parker, Dick Hauserman, Gaynor Miller, Peter Seibert and Morrie Sheppard form the first Board of Trustees.
- Bob Beattie first brings the U.S. National Training Camp to Vail. Beattie and the National Team return in 1963 and 1965.
1963
- Ski Club Vail hosts its first Rocky Mountain Ski Association race- the Vail Cup is born.
1964
- Ski Club Vail receives its 501(c)(3) non-profit status from the Internal Revenue Service.
1965
- Bob Parker, Pete Seibert, and U.S. Alpine Coach Bob Beattie create the International Team Races, a forerunner of today's Nation's Cup standings and World Cup races, and they're held in Vail that year, as well as in 1967 and 1968.
1967
- Ski Club Vail forms the first Junior Racing Program in Vail and offers two programs in its first season- the Vail Racing Team, for those interested in serious competition and the Vail Junior Program, for younger skiers being introduced to competitive skiing.
- Program Fees are $65 and membership dues are $18.
- Gaynor Miller is elected President of the Board of Trustees.
- George Rau becomes Executive Director, replacing Paul Bacon; he also coaches the Vail Racing Team.
- Ski Club Vail's budget in its first season offering programs is $16,000.
1968
- The race hill at Golden Peak is widened.
1973
- Rudd Pyles becomes the first Ski Club Vail racer to advance to the U.S. Ski Team.
- Ski Club Vail's first Head Coach (and later Executive Director), George Rau, departs to take a position will USSA.
- Dave Irish assumes the Executive Director.
1975
- Bill Sargent serves as President of the Board of Trustees.
1976
- Ski Club Vail begins plans to build a Clubhouse enabled by a donation of a quarter acre of land from Vail Associates and a donation of architectural services by local architects Pierce Briner and Fitzhugh Scott.
- John Casella replaces Dave Irish as Ski Club Vail's Executive Director.
- Coaches Russ Speirn, Tom Cannon, and Bob Seeman take on the newly created Ski Team Vail and Talent Squad racers- concepts created to give those racers with a chance at making the U.S. Team a chance to develop their potential.
1977
- The original clubhouse is dedicated in December. Byron Brown is the building chairman; and Frank Pettee is the Board President.
- Nearly 60 skiers are enrolled at Ski Club Vail...the largest number yet!
1980
- Ski Club Vail member John Buxman makes the U.S. Ski Team "B" Team.
- Ed Livran is elected Board of Trustees President.
- Butch Graves takes over as Executive Director.
1981
- Ski Club Vail member Mike Brown makes the U.S. National Junior Team.
- Mike Porter hired as Executive Director.
1982
- Byron Brown is elected President of the Board of Trustees.
1983
- Between 1983 and 1987, Charlie Adams shares directorship with Mike Porter.
1984
- Ed Livran takes over from Byron Brown for his second tenure as Board of Trustees President.
1986
- Future Executive Director, Chip Woods, is named U.S. Domestic Coach of the Year.
- A second floor is added to the Ski Club Vail clubhouse, nearly doubling its size.
- Program enrollments explode to 118, doubling in just 10 years.
1987
- Ski Club Vail enrollment is at 157.
1988
- Erik Steinberg begins his tenure as Executive Director.
1989
- Gordie Rowe, Tony Bryan, Tom Bailey, Pam Del Bosco, Basil Katsaros, Jim Viele, Bud Issacs, and Phil Hoversten are all elected or re-elected to the Board of Trustees.
1990
- Larry Benway, Rick Bolduc, Rocky Christopher, Joanne Colt, Phil Hoversten, Charles Lorch and Jean Wilson are elected to the Board of Trustees.
- Future Executive Director, Aldo Radamus, is named U.S. Domestic Coach of the Year.
1991
- Della Otto, Steve McSpadden, and Kim Zimmerman are welcomed to the Board of Trustees.
- The annual Ski Swap nets $81,500.
1992
- Vail Valley Academy is created by Terresa Herbst; six students and five teachers attend.
1995
- A Nordic program is attempted for the 1995-96 season; however only one athlete enrolls and the program is discontinued.
1996
- 36 Students enroll at Vail Valley Academy.
- Annual Ski Swap brings over $90,000 in revenue.
- Three Ski Club Vail athletes are named the the U.S. Ski Team "C Team".
- Ski Club Vail coach Crawford Pierce is named USSA Coach of the Year.
1997
- Ski Club Vail wins its fourth consecutive "Fastski" trophy for the top team in the Rocky Mountain Division.
- Enrollments for the 1997-1998 season reach 257.
- Ski Club Vail initiates its Booster Program.
1998
- Tom Banner, John Goodman, and Elizbeth Schaeffer are elected as new members to the Board of Trustees.
- Larissa Felli serves as the Board of Trustees Racer Representative for the 1998-99 season.
- Ski Club Vail, in conjuction with Vail Junior Hockey, hosts the first annual Glitter, Gates & Skates (which later becomes Glitter, Gates & Rails).
- The Annual Ski Swap nets $105,000.
1999
- Ski Club Vail is voted the 1999 USSA Alpine Club of the Year.
- Plans are drawn for a proposed new 25,000 square foot clubhouse building.
2000
- The Freestyle Program is added to Ski Club Vail; this new program draws 31 new skiers.
2001
- Pete Seibert, Jr. replaces Phil Hoversten as Board of Trustees President.
2002
- Ski Club Vail officially changes its name to Ski & Snowboard Club Vail.
- Aldo Radamus is hired to replace Chip Woods as Executive Director.
- 283 athletes enroll for the 2002-03 season.
- Snowboarding is added to the list of programs.
- $22,000 in scholarship funds are awarded to SSCV students and athletes.
2003
- Brad Ghent replaces Pete Seibert, Jr. as the Board of Trustees President.
- Kathleen Payne replaces Terresa Herbst as the Vail Valley Academy's Academic Director.
- Ali Levy becomes the first Ski & Snowboard Club Vail freestyle athlete to advance to the U.S. Ski Team.
- 312 athletes enroll for the 2003-04 season.
- Vail Valley Academy enrollment is at its largest ever, with 44 students.
- $35,000 in scholarship funds are awarded to 29 athletes/students.
- Jamie Klein, Ceil Folz, and Mike Spriggs join the Board of Directors.
2004
- SSCV celebrates its 40th Anniversary and hosts an Alumni Reunion.
- Vi and Byron Brown are recognized with a "Lifetime of Volunteerism Award" and George Rau is recognized with a "Coaching Leadership Award".
- SSCV incorporates a Nordic program into its offerings.
- Rocky Christopher and Larry Benway retire from the Board of Trustees and 15 and 20 years of service, respectively. Also retiring are Steve Avery, Tom Banner, Debra Duke, John McMurty, and Kevin Wall. Ron Alvarez joins the Board of Trustees.
2005
- SSCV awards over $40,000 in scholarship funds to more than 40 athletes.
- Enrollment continues to grow with 365 athletes participating in programs.
- Shannon Armstrong, Steve Santamaria, and Chuck Wachendorfer join the Board of Trustees.
2006
- Enrollments are at their highest levels ever with 394 athletes.
- More than 50 athletes receive over $75,000 in scholarship awards.
- Glenn Davis replaces Brad Ghent as the Board of Trustees President.
- Tanya Tanner replaces Kathleen Payne as the Vail Valley Academy's Academic Director.
- Jim Harding, Liz Leeds, David Viele and David White join the Board of Trustees.
2007
- SSCV enrollment continues to grow, with a total of 425 athletes.
- Dan Leever and Scott Walchek join the Board of Trustees.
- SSCV Alumna Lindsey (Kildow) Vonn becomes the first ski racing athlete with Colorado roots to win a World Championship or Olympic Medal; winning two silver medals in DH and Super G in the 2007 World Alpine Ski Championships in Are, Sweden.
- Broc Waring becomes the first SSCV Snowboard athlete to be named to the US Snowboard Team, competing in the halfpipe.
- In conjunction with Eagle County School District, SSCV creates the first public ski/snowboard academy in the country- Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy. Enrollment for the first year is 56 students.
- Vail Valley Academy is renamed and becomes Vail Valley Tutorial Academy.
2008
- SSCV Alumna Lindsey (Kildow) Vonn wins the 2008 Overall World Cup Champion and 2008 Downhill World Cup Champion.
- Will Gregorak is named to the USST D Team
- Jeff Kirwood join the Board of Trustees
2009
- SSCV Alumna Lindsey (Kildow) Vonn wins the 2009 Overall World Cup Champion, 2009 Downhill World Cup Champion and 2009 Super G World Cup Champion.
- Greta Byrne is named to the USST D Team.
- Early season training is made available by a $3M snowmaking upgrade in cooperation with Vail Resorts and financed by SSCV. Completion was on October 5, 2009 and training began on November 3, 2009. The fully automated snowmaking system covers 329 vertical meters of variable terrain including FIS homologated courses for Slalom and Giant Slalom.
- Heidi Kloser was named to the U.S. Freestyle Team
2010
- SSCV Alumna Lindsey Von wins Olympic Gold & Bronze, 2010 Overall World Cup Champion, 2010 Downhill World Cup Chamption, 2010 Super G World Cup Champion and 2010 Super Combined World Cup Champion
- Abby Ghent is named to the USST D Team
- Phil Duff, Ken Deline and Tim Itin join the Board of Trustees
