VSSA-Winter Tutorial

Overview

Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy-Winter Tutorial (VSSA-WT), is a flexible, private tutoring component of Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy. Using curriculum provided by the student-athlete's "school of origin," VSSA-WT supports the student-athlete's academics while an athlete at Ski & Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV). VSSA-WT welcomes student-athletes in sixth through eighth grades and will consider fifth grade and high school students on a case-by-case basis. VSSA-WT is dedicated to helping each student achieve his/her academic potential and goals while improving time-management and organizational skills. It welcomes students from around the country and world and fosters a rigorous academic environment. VSSA-WT generally operates from early November and continues through early April 1, 2012.

VSSA-WT Mission

To provide quality educational opportunities that promote student success, while remaining flexible for students’ athletic needs. To deliver a curriculum that not only meets the School of  Origins requirement, but also challenges students to excel, improve, and apply their knowledge.

Academics

Support is offered in English, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. VSSA-WT emphasizes a one-on-one tutoring environment while taking advantage of group enrichment opportunities. VSSA-WT’s success relies on a cooperative education effort by VSSA-WT tutors, parents, students, and the School of Origin (SOO). Any specific learning targets or standardize tests required by the School of Origin should be addressed prior to student’s arrival.

History

VSSA-WT was established in 1992 to reinforce the mission of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV). The VSSA-WT is a setting where both athletics and academics may be pursued. Students must come to the Winter Tutorial committed to assuming full responsibility for their experience. Students are responsible for obtaining questionnaires and textbooks from their School of Origin prior to the start of VSSA-WT and also for communicating their competition schedule to their teachers and Advisor throughout the season. VSSA-WT is governed by the SSCV Board of Trustees and Geoff Grimmer, the Head of School, who reports to SSCV Executive Director, Aldo Radamus. All VSSA-WT activities are coordinated and overseen by the VSSA Head of School.

Testimonials

"(VSSA-WT) helped me to accomplish school tasks during the busiest part of my ski racing season, something a public school could not do. The teachers were involved and paced classes according to my busy schedule. Not only does Vail Valley (Tutorial) Academy adjust to help each student individually, it gives us, the students, a sense of responsibility and self motivation.”

Sarah Schleper, U.S. Ski Team Member

“I would like to state my unconditional support of (VSSA-WT). My daughter, Lindsey, attended the Academy for three years and, despite her intense racing and training schedule, managed to stay with or ahead of her class when she returned to school after winter term. I attribute this to the Academy staff, who were always available to provide Lindsey with one-on-one teaching and assistance when necessary to help her understand the information she may have missed. This support, in spite of the physical and academic challenges he racing lifestyle put in her path, enabled Lindsey to remain the centered and well-rounded person she is.”

Linda Kildow, mother of Lindsey Vonn, U.S. Ski Team Member
